Esta banda americana teve seu início em 1981 na cidade de Arlington no Texas. Após três bons álbuns, o vocalista Terry Glaze foi demitido, dando lugar a Philip Hansen Anselmo, ou simplesmente Phil Anselmo, o que definitivamente mostrou-se uma escolha acertada. Antes da entrada Phil, o Pantera apresentava um som mais voltado para o Glam Metal/ Hard Rock, assim, o vocalista foi o principal responsável em tornar o som da banda mais extremo, o que pode-se perceber claramente comparando o clássico Cowboys From Hell (1990) com os discos mais antigos do quarteto. Citando o CFH com o início da mudança da sonoridade do Pantera, não pode-se esquecer do também clássico Vulgar Display Of Power (1992) que marcou de vez o ponto central das transformações que a banda apresentaria nos próximos trabalhos e os definiu de uma vez por todas como uma banda de Thrash Metal. Esta época apresenta também a melhor formação do Pantera com Phil Anselmo (vocais), Dimebag Darrell (guitarra), Rex Brown (baixo) e Vinnie Paul (bateria). Voltando a falar de Vulgar Display Of Power, este é considerado um dos trabalhos mais influentes da música pesada da década de 90, além de ser o primeiro do Pantera a figurar nas paradas de sucesso norte-americanas.
Porém, quando se fala de paradas de sucesso, nada se compara ao feito alcançado pelo sétimo disco da banda Far Beyond Driven (1994), que chegou a primeira posição da Billboard na semana de seu lançamento, triunfando sobre Toni Braxton, Soundgarden e Ace Of Base, até hoje um feito impressionante, principalmente pelo disco em questão ser considerado o mais extremo da história a liderar as paradas de sucesso norte-americanas.
O Pantera se dissolveu em 2001, com a saída de Phil Anselmo que fundou a banda Down.
Em 2004, uma notícia triste não só para o Pantera, como para todos os amantes da música pesada no mundo: no dia 8 de dezembro, Dimebag Darrell foi assassinado a tiros por um fanático por Pantera, numa casa de espetáculos de Ohio. Com a morte do guitarrista, uma reunião da banda tornou-se uma coisa improvável, até porque, aonde eles iriam conseguir um substituto para Dimebag?
